OUR BATTERSEA BOY

Hannah and Karen who brought Patch (now Thatch) down from Battersea

You know when something just plays on your mind and you have to make a decision, well this is what happened with a 5 year old white and brindle boy called Patch (new name being thought of as we write).

Patch was what they call an 'open racer' which, in laymans terms, meant he was a very good racer. He did good on the track but on race number 75 he fell and was injured. During his recouperation he became very nervous frightened of everything especially noises so that was the end of his career.

He lay around in kennels for a while then was taken to Battersea together with three other greyhounds all of which were homed but poor Patch remained. I suppose his life was saved by being put into that famous home as it was likely that he would have met his maker as the very young age of 4ish which is what he was when he was retired.

He has been in three foster homes since then and we probably think of our poor Nog who was also a nervous wreck when we took him on 3 years ago. Never likely to be homed because of this we felt he was destined to come to us and that feeling was there again with Patch. Hopefully the gang will give him more confidence (not too much!!!) and he will learn to trust again, we can but try.

He is also similar markings to our very first greyhound Chappie who took us on the road to starting Greyhound Rescue Jersey 20years ago. So there are just little things that make us think he had to join our gang at the Sanctuary.

Well he will be travelling first class as usual, in the capable hands of Pilot Chris as opposed to Postman Pat. Patch will not be travelling alone as Sue and Bob Fearis, who have had 4 greyhounds from us, one delivered last Friday, are getting a puppy Bulldog. Apparently Bob has always wanted one, so he will be brought up in the capable greyhound paws of Duke, Cauchy and Lexi.

Pilot Chris will be flying to Wite Waltam a little airport near Windsor for small planes to land, and Hannah from Battersea will be delivering Patch and Claire will be bringing puppy Bulldog down so that should be an interesting introduction.

We thank everyone involved in getting Patch to Jersey it has taken a while but he is now safely with us and walking up that yellow brick road to gain some courage and confidence from the Wizard of Oz, I draw the line at red shoes though!!!!
